About Us

Villa Poggiolo (around 1790)

"

I have always preferred to produce wines with a distinct personality—perhaps not always flawless, but with a very particular taste that ties them inseparably to the land from which they come.

Our Winery

Since 1962, we have been the owners of Tenuta Poggiolo in the heart of the Chianti Senese. Thanks to the unique microclimate and the particularly stony composition of the soils, the subtle but significant differences between our vineyards, and a careful process of winemaking and aging, we produce red wines that are true expressions of the land they come from and of our passion for transforming lush grape clusters into wines with a strong and proud personality.

The Founder
In 1975, Federico Bonfio (1932–2009) decided to renew all the existing vineyards on the estate with new, innovatively designed vineyards, aiming to improve the quality of the wines and to compete with the best, mainly French, wines on international markets. The first exports date back to 1975–1979, reaching the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

In the early 2000s, we partially renewed some vineyards by introducing Cabernet Sauvignon, followed in later years by Merlot and Syrah.

Sangiovese remains the most widely cultivated grape variety. We have also reintroduced Canaiolo, a traditional ancient grape variety historically grown in Tuscany.
